Temporary Greenbelt Closure Near Julia Davis Park Starts March 31

March 27, 2025

A short section of the Boise River Greenbelt under Capitol Boulevard will be closed starting Monday, March 31 while the City of Boise’s Public Works team repairs a geothermal pipe. The tunnel closure along the north side of the river is expected to end the week of April 21. Greenbelt users are asked to follow all posted signs and use the detours at the Boise State Friendship Bridge and Ann Morrison Park Pedestrian Bridge. Please note, detours are also in place at the 8th Street intersection adjacent to the Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial as mobility improvements are underway.

Boise’s geothermal system heats approximately 100 buildings and six million square feet of space with clean, renewable energy. In the last six years, the city has replaced more than half of the original system, which was installed in the 1980s, with new, modernized pipes.

“Operating the nation’s largest geothermal system without disruption while modernizing its infrastructure is our mission,” said Jon Gunnerson, City of Boise civil engineer. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we make this upgrade to Boise’s unique clean energy utility.”
