What is the purpose of these safety enhancements?

We are committed to creating safe, accessible, and welcoming environments for everyone. The goal of this project is to enhance safety and security along the Boise River Greenbelt and the adjacent Willow Lane Athletic Complex. This is a high-traffic stretch of Greenbelt, frequently used for transportation, and the new lighting will increase safety for people traveling through the area as well as for those using the nearby park and its various features. By installing new lighting in these areas, we’re aiming to improve visibility and security for all users.

Why are these safety improvements being introduced?

City staff have been in communication with neighbors and community members who have requested additional safety enhancements along this Greenbelt section and near the popular community park. This investment of more than $1 million comes after conversations with neighbors and community members who requested additional safety upgrades. These discussions guided these safety enhancements and the approach to add lighting in the area. In addition, the project team is taking a scalable approach to this project with the opportunity for additional updates in the future as funding is available.

What areas of the Greenbelt and park will be affected?

The improvements are focused on enhancing safety and visibility in key areas, including the addition of lighting along the Greenbelt pathway and other strategic locations. These pathway-focused enhancements will be installed along the Greenbelt pathway, extending towards Lander Street. Temporary closures may be necessary during construction, which will be communicated and signed to notify users ahead of time. We appreciate your patience and cooperation throughout the upcoming construction.

How is this project being funded?

This investment of city general funds comes after conversations with neighbors and community members made clear the need for enhancements and safety upgrades in the area. The department is anticipating a cost of $1.3 million for the currently planned Greenbelt lighting, accessibility, and safety improvements.
